Tony's mother was an alcoholic, so Tony and Ratter were left to fend for themselves. They would steal food from markets together. Ratter always watched the sellers at the stalls and gave a signal when they and their dæmons were not paying attention. Tony then grabbed something to eat (like an apple or some nuts) and hid them inside his wide shirt.
One day, when Tony was eating a pie he stole, Ratter met Marisa Coulter's dæmon. In the form of a sparrow, Ratter hopped into the dæmon's hand and from that moment, she and Tony were both lost. With the promise of chocolatl, Marisa Coulter lured them to her warehouse, and sent them to Bolvangar. At the experimental station, Ratter and Tony underwent intercision. When Lyra Silvertongue released the severed dæmons, Ratter was not there.
Ratter was seen in the form of a mouse cleaning her whiskers while Tony ate. When she was curious about Marisa Coulter's dæmon she became a sparrow.
Ratter, much like her human counterpart Tony, was slow-witted.
