She recently portrayed Mrs. Coulter in the film the Golden Compass, based on the first piece in the His Dark Materials trilogy, Northern Lights.
Pullman had said that should there be a film version he would like Kidman for the role, but as he had no input in the casting, it is not sure how her involvement came about.
This is the second film in which she will star alongside actor Daniel Craig, after working with him on the film The Invasion.
It is unsure as to whether Kidman will be involved in any future adaptations, as their production is dependent solely on the success of the Golden Compass.
