The Church (also known as The Magisterium) was the most powerful institution in Lyra's world. Its aim was to keep order by hiding the existence of Dust and the parallel universes. Those who went against the teachings of the Church were deemed heretics and subject to harsh punishments including execution.


Pope John Calvin moved the seat of the papacy to Geneva. After his death, the papacy was abolished and the Magisterium grew up in its place.


The Magisterium was composed of various courts, councils and colleges which did not always agree. Among them were:

The Church is referred to exclusively as The Magisterium in the film adaptation, in an effort to avoid offending religious organizations.
