Harpies are guardians of the Land of the Dead. When the Authority first gave them this task they were told to feed off the misery of the dead by taunting them with every wrongful deed they had committed during life.

They have the wings and talons of a bird but the face and breasts of a human female. Harpies have a horrible stench, a combination of rotten meat and other unspeakable things.

In The Amber Spyglass, Lady Salmakia and Lyra convince the harpies (and more specifically Gracious Wings) to lead the dead to the window that leads into the mulefa's world in exchange for true stories of the dead's former life.
