His Dark Materials

A photogram was an image created by focusing light on a surface, such as film, which was treated with an emulsion. Standard photograms were taken on film with a silver nitrate emulsion. Another specially prepared emulsion allowed photograms to show Dust.[1] These photograms could be viewed using a projecting lantern. It was the closest Lyra Silvertongue had ever experienced to a cinema before she went with Will Parry in his world.[2] Will's world also had photographs taken from cameras.[3]

History[]

When the Consistorial Court of Discipline visited The Trout Inn, they put up photograms of Thomas Nugent.[4] Later, when Lord Asriel was looking for funding for another expedition to the North, he used special photograms to show the Dust entering a man, and the city in the aurora to the scholars at Jordan College.[1]
