The Abyss[1] was a void between worlds, opened by the Magisterium's efforts to kill Lyra using a special bomb. Dust continuously fell into the Abyss and was lost, much like dust that slipped between Windows. When Lyra Silvertongue and Will Parry were freeing the ghosts from the land of the dead, they led the dead across a ledge above the Abyss. Metatron was detained by Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter as they fell to their deaths in the Abyss.
